The Story of Us

Disclaimer: This much overdue brief  recount of our love story is a bit long. Why? Because it didn’t start with me falling in love with her at first sight, and me sweeping her off her feet. Ours is a story built on a foundation of good friendship, quality time together and a lot of joyful conversations.

It was her 1st day in the company in August 2008 when I met her. Her manager introduced the new hire in his team – Kristine. We exchanged names and smiles, before they continued on. I found her cute but no, it was not love at first sight. It was on the 3rd time that we met, that Kristine actually remembered me. We were in White Rock Subic for a company teambuilding. My fellow new hire roommate Earl cajoled Mark (another new hire) and I to visit our lady new hire friends Kristine and Cherie in their room. We spent the night in the girls’ room playing cards and charades, and getting to know each other. As we got back into our own room, Earl’s phone rang. It was Kristine telling him that someone left his phone on her bed – it was mine. I told them that I’d go and retrieve it. After they hung up, the boys started their teasing: “Woohoo, Adrin! Style mo bulok!” After the teambuilding incident, I didn’t pursue Tine any further. I had no plans then of having a girlfriend yet as I wanted to focus on my career. There was even a time when I teased Mark into courting Tine as they look good together, but he just shoved off the idea.

Over the months, Tine and I became really good friends. Together with our other new hire friends, we would go out for lunches, practice for new hire “talent shows,” organize team meetings and even prepare small birthday surprises for each other. One time, we went to Laiya, Batangas for an overnight trip. That night, we played Spin-The-Bottle-Truth-Or-Dare, and the question for me was: “If you had to, who would you court in office?” I really thought about it, and I answered “Tine.” She’s cute, nice and, best of all, witty. I really enjoyed the conversations I had with her. After a few spins, it was Tine’s turn to be asked: “If someone from the office were to court you, who would you hope it would be?” She answered “Adrin.” I thought then that she was just being courteous and funny. But it was one of those turning points in our love lives.

It was almost habit that Tine and I walk together after office towards Ayala MRT station to catch our ride home. It’s a 15-minute walk but it always seemed like a breeze because the moments are filled with stories, laughter and random joyful conversations. It was during one of our walks in December 2008, 4 months after Tine and I met, that I decided to make the leap and ask her out. Weeks before, I already had this uneasy feeling towards Tine. “Hindi ko alam kung nasosobrahan lang ako sa kape. Pero minsan, bumibilis ang tibok ng puso kapag nakikita ko si Tine.” This was an honest and heartfelt statement that I confided to our female office friends. [I found out later on, when Tine and I were already together, that apparently my confidants were more loyal to Tine. And she knew about those things this even before. I still can’t believe they did that to me. Hahaha.] We went ice skating for our 1st date. I knew how to skate, she didn’t. And yes, it was intentional. Our 1st date was followed by more dates – movies, dinner dates, and “field trips” with her kid cousin and my kid sister. Our friendship developed into something more special.

It was January 21, 2009, after watching Jim Carrey’s “Yes Man,” that Tine and I declared that it was officially US. The conversation went something like this.
Adrin: “Tayo na ba?
Tine: “Ewan ko.”
Adrin: “OK, tayo na nga. So, date na lang ang kulang… Gusto mo i-set natin sa Feb 14?”
Tine: “Wag, cheesy masyado.”
Adrin: “Ok sige, ngayon na nga lang.”

February 12 was the first time I told Tine I loved her. February 14 was the time she said she loved me too. On our 3rd anniversary, I proposed to her. Now we're less than a year to our next big milestone!!! Wait, were you able to put up with the cheesiness? =P

Filled with kilig,

Ever After Begins Today Turns 1!!!

It's been public knowledge that I'm a blogging newbie. I was encouraged to create this blog for it to serve as a documentation of Adrin and I's preparation for our wedding day. Skeptical in the beginning, I'm still surprised that we managed to post 60 entries (this being the 61st) to date. Yes, Adrin has made contributions to this too! =)

Pardon my overly sentimental nature, I'd just really like to mark our 1st year of blogging. It has been a year since and I'm looking forward to more years of sharing stories with you. =)

Cheers to more years of blogging!

Turning Japanese Part 1 - The Arrival

February arrived in such a breeze as we juggled work, house concerns (which led us to the cancellation of our reservation), and wedding preps. We had no plans whatsoever for the upcoming Valentine's and as I have mentioned in my anniversary entry, we're set for a Japan trip this month. With all the crazy things going on around me, I just found myself packing my winter clothes a week before our departure date.

Fast forward to Valentine's, Adrin took a leave from work that day while I stayed late in the office and waited for him to pick me up. Early morning of the following day was our flight out and we decided to come directly from my place which is nearer the airport.

We reached NAIA terminal 1 fairly early, and since we have business class seats (thanks to Adrin’s miles! woohoo!) checking in has been really swift. After which, we headed to Delta’s lounge to grab some breakfast. Adrin passed his time reading while I was leisurely hooked on the internet. Boarding time came and we comfortably took our personal space for the next 4 hours. It was an uneventful flight spent by eating, watching a movie and consequently sleeping on it while it’s still playing.

The Delta Business Elite Experience

Upon arrival at Narita airport, we got our train tickets going to Archie’splace. He is Adrin’s college friend who currently lives in Japan for a work assignment. We roomed with him during our stay there. It was a 2-hour train ride from the airport to Inagi city where he lives. First dilemma, we can’t call Archie to pick us up from the train station since my roaming did not activate (boo!) and we can't call him through the payphone as we can't figure out how to dial in his Japan number.

Armed with the map I researched and printed out, we decided to follow it and search for his place ourselves. Not to mention the 4 big bags we werelugging and the chilly weather with light showers, it has been quite an adventure walking and asking around for directions. It's so frustrating to see how the language barrier can hold the locals back from helping us. Luckily, with the help of a polite middle-aged English-speaking local and his GPS capable smartphone, we were able to find Archie’s crib safely. He was surprised to see us by his doorstep since he’s expecting for us to call first. We shared to him our walking drama as he ushered us in.

Since we were able to settle in quickly, we discussed the plan for what's left of our day. It has been decided that we rest first and prepare our bags then go straight to Shinjuku to have some xiao long bao from Din Tai Fung, see the city's Illumination display and catch our overnight bus to the Ski Resort. Little did we know that Din Tai Fung is also such a hit with the Japanese that when we got there by dinner time, there's already a long queue outside the restaurant. Since we do not have the luxury of time that night, we decided to just skip it and eat somewhere else.

Before grabbing our dinner, Archie took us to the lights display and began to snap away. It has been a joke between him and Adrin that he'll be our photographer as we do a practice prenup in Japan. Haha.

We had dinner at a local place where we ordered a pork rice bowl and japanese curry. It was a new experience to choose and pay for your food via a vendo machine and hand only your stub to the waiter so they can serve it to you. Cool eh? Our meal was brought to us only after several minutes. Next we need to mix the raw egg into the rice bowl. I was able to successfully do it with my bowl when I suddenly heard Adrin yelp. Since his meal has a bigger serving, when he transferred the egg into it, it just slid right off the bowl and landed on the table. Oopsie, no more egg for him then. It was such a good meal still that we're able to finish it in less than 15mins! Whew! What an achievement for a slow-eater like me! Hihi.

Our food, with the warning for the egg slide scenario,
and the actual mess from the mishap.

With our night's fill, we hastened to the bus stop where will board our ride for the night that will take us to the  ski resort. It's quite a long journey, and we're expected to arrive there by daylight. Waiting for the bus wasn't a chore as we observed the locals alongside a few photo ops.

I'll continue in my next post the rest of our vacation story.

Til the next one!

Our Laid Back 4th Anniversary

Last Monday was our fourth anniversary, which also happened to be the anniversary of our engagement. Our original plan is to celebrate it in Japan as we have our short vacation, but due to some uncontrollable events, the trip was pushed to February. That left us with an ordinary weekday anniversary.

And so with the trip waiting the following month, we wanted to be frugal on the day itself. We gunned for a simple dinner at Shi Lin, our favourite place to devour those soupy dumplings called Xiao Long Bao. It's their Alabang Town Center branch that we headed to this time to have those steaming goodness.

Our simple dinner

After eating to our heart’s content, we window shopped a bit before finally going to the movie house to see Life of Pi. We were enticed to watch because of raves for its digital effects, but after the movie, we walked out also captured by the witty and interesting lines. We even found ourselves dissecting the script on the ride home. Haha.

With the car already parked in front of our house, Adrin suddenly leaped out announcing that he has a gift for me. Clutching a guitar, he returned to the driver’s seat. Unfortunately the limited space made it hard for him  to play the guitar so we moved to the back seat. As we comfortably took our places, he started strumming. I didn’t know what song it is at first until he sang the first line. It was Grow Old With You! At that point, I lightly laughed and told him “Sumu-Zoren ka ah!” and continued listening to his singing. What’s most touching is the fact that I know how huge an effort it was for him dish such act. You see, Adrin considers himself musically challenged and believes that he eternally could not carry a tune. Him singing in karaoke would be a once in a blue moon occurrence.

With the last strum of his fingers, I hugged and kissed him with tears in my eyes. I just can’t help being emotional realizing the lengths he’d go just to surprise me. I again kidded him of doing a Zoren but he countered that he didn’t know that the actor also sang that song in his grand surprise for Carmina. He told me that he learned the chords two weeks before and was so nervous that I’d see the guitar in his car.

His surprises for me

We eventually went inside the house where I hurriedly recovered my gift for him. I actually had it with me since November and was fighting the excitement to hand it to him prematurely. It was a story photobook  of our 4-year journey together. He started leafing through it and would stop at some pages longer than usual, retrieving those instances from his memory bank perhaps. =)

My gift to him

Here are some of my favorite pages from our photo storybook (some pages are soft copies).

He rendered a repeat performance after reading our story book. And yes, I was his lone audience still. =)

The repeat performance

Oh what a good night it was - far different from our past 3 anniversaries, but nonetheless cheesy. Again, Happy Anniversary Sweetie! I’m excited to spend the rest of my life with you! =)

Cheers!
